WraySec Sponsors First Annual U.S. IT Collegiate Conference

San Antonio, TX: WraySec LLC., a Cyber Security Consulting firm based in central Pennsylvania, was one of the sponsors for the first annual USAA U.S. IT Collegiate Conference (USITCC) held in San Antonio at the Wyndham San Antonio Riverwalk Hotel on April 6 and 7. WraySec also sponsored and hosted the Security Challenge portion of the event. This new event was held in conjunction with ISECON 2018 (Information Systems Education Conference) the nation's leading conference for Information Systems and Information Technology college and university faculty.

A total of 30 colleges and universities attended the event which was co-hosted by Texas State University and Our Lady of the Lake University. Participants included 3 students from American University in Cairo, Egypt. There were 225 students and 35 faculty participating in the mutli-day activities.

A total of nine (9) IT competition were available for the student attendees to choose from each of which was staffed with a contest coordinator and judging team. The problem statements were challenging yet students rose to the occasion for the bragging rights of placing at a national IT competition.

Areas of competition included Database Design Contest (39 teams), Microsoft Office Solutions Contest (52 teams), Business Analytics Contest (19 teams), Network Design Contest (25 teams), Application Development (33 teams),Systems Analysis & Design Contest (21 teams), PC Troubleshooting (84 contestants), Mobile Application Development (11 teams), and Security (77 contestants).

WraySec started the Security Challenge with a qualification round. In this round, the 77 participants completed a written qualification exam comprised of both knowledge-based and practical-based questions. The top 25 finalists from the qualification round moved onto the final round.

For the final round, WraySec developed puzzles (challenges) for the cyber exercise competition which are tailored to entry-level job roles and tasks in Defensive and Offensive Cyber Security Operations. Scoring for the competition was provided via WraySec's CyExNg, a Cyber Exercise Platform, currently in open beta. The CyExNg platform is designed to streamline the scoring of cyber exercises, ranging from internal training events to international cyber competitions, often referred to as capture the flag or simply a 'CTF.' As the participants completed each puzzle, they found a “flag” and submitted it for points. A flag is essentially a piece of data, representing real-world data.

Kevin Jetton, the USITCC Director, announced the top three placements and honorable mentions for the Cyber Security Challenge at the USITCC Closing Award Banquet. WraySec is proud to to announce the following results of the Security Challenge:

Thanks for your support of AITP and USITCC. Just a quick correction on your contest results. Sean Skipton is from Oklahoma Panhandle State University not Tarleton State University.
